A Florida car salesman is going viral on TikTok after sharing what he called "stupid" high prices for Hondas and Toyotas at a recent auction.
TikTok user @mrdwing filmed himself and his partner, Ben, walking through the lot, stopping at a 13-year-old Honda Accord with just 75,000 miles. In the clip, Ben asked what the car might be worth. @mrdwing threw out a guess of $9,000.
He wasn’t far off.
"The price that it is posted for is $9,100," Ben tells him.
"That’s insane, guys. $9,100 at the auction," @mrdwing replies. "You know what’s crazy? A dealer is going to overpay retail for that."
The moment turned into a broader point about pricing. @mrdwing said he expects a dealership—whether a Honda store or a used lot—to end up paying full retail for the same car, even though it showed up at auction at a price he already considers too high.
He also warned that dealers who don’t adjust their inventory-buying practices could run into trouble.
@mrdwing and Ben ultimately walked away without making an offer, but said they planned to keep an eye on the Accord to see whether it climbs past $10,000 MMR—an industry benchmark that reflects what similar cars are selling for at auction and is typically lower than the retail price customers end up paying at dealerships.
"There are a couple of good ones out here, guys. A couple of good ones that we’re going to keep our eye on for sure," @mrdwing says. As of this writing, the video has more than 1,183 views.
2013 Honda Accord: How Does This Price Measure Up?
That $9,100 price isn’t as wild as it might sound, but it does depend on where you’re looking.
For a 2013 Honda Accord with around 75,000 miles, most dealership listings tend to land somewhere in the low-to-mid $10,000 range, depending on the trim and condition, according to Edmunds. Lower mileage like that usually pushes the price higher, especially if the car has a clean history and has been well-maintained.
Private sales are typically a bit cheaper. You’ll usually see similar cars listed closer to the $9,000 to $11,000 range.
At the wholesale level, where dealers are buying, prices tend to be lower, which could explain why that auction price caught their attention. Cars like that often sell at auction for several thousand less than what they’ll eventually be listed for. That gap is where dealers make their margin once they clean the car up and resell it.
Condition and trim still matter a lot. A base model will land on the lower end, while higher trims with features like leather or navigation can push the price up. Service history plays a role, too, especially on older cars.
So while $9,100 might feel high for an auction—at least for some buyers—that price actually is not far off from what a buyer might pay privately and is still below what the same car could go for at a dealership.
Viewers Applaud 2013 Honda Accord Auction Price
People watching @mrdwing’s video disagreed with his price assessment, with many arguing the Accord looked like a steal.
"I will take it," one commenter wrote.
"Hell yeah, Hondas hold value good. I have [a] 2006 Honda Odyssey 150K miles," another said. "I could easily sell it for 5K maybe even more."
"That’s a good deal," a third person added.
@mrdwing jumped back in to say the broader market is part of what’s driving prices up.
"Bro, it’s a 2013," @mrdwing wrote. "That car is a five-grand car if the market [weren’t] the way it is today."
He added that in a more typical market, the same car would likely sell for around $12,999 on a dealership lot.
Some viewers, though, zeroed in on another moment from the video. Toward the end, @mrdwing and Ben came across what he described as an "ally repo" Aston Martin. Ben guessed it was worth $150,000 MMR, but @mrdwing suggested he wasn’t close.
"Imagine spending over $200,000 and getting your [expletive] repo’d," @mrdwing said.
That set off a round of guesses in the comments.
"$11,000," one person wrote.
"15k," another added.
"$8,000," a third said.
To that last guess, @mrdwing replied, "Absolutely."
