Florida governor Ron DeSantis ends Disney theme park's special status

INSIDE THE AMERICAS © FRANCE 24

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill giving him control of Walt Disney World's self-governing district. A five-member board will now be appointed to oversee the government services provided in the state's Disney properties. DeSantis is taking aim at Disney over the company's opposition to the state's "Don't Say Gay" law. The move also comes ahead of an expected announcement of his 2024 presidential run.

Meanwhile, federal agencies in the United States have been given 30 days to uninstall TikTok from government-issued devices. The move comes as concerns mount that its parent company ByteDance would give user data to the Chinese government. China says govenment-issued bans on apps are tantamount to an abuse of state power. But Beijing for its part bans Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

Finally, police in Peru have stumbled upon a man carrying a mummy estimated to be hundreds of years old in a cooler bag. The mummy is now in the custody of the culture ministry. The man remains in detention while investigators review the case.
