Flora, Bertolli and I can't Believe It's Not Butter shrink tubs as butter prices continue to rise

Shoppers who have switched to spread amidst the rising cost of butter are in for a shock - as three major brands have shrunk their tubs, but kept prices the same. Flora, Bertolli and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter have had a few of their larger tubs reduced by around 10 percent, though the prices have remained the same.

All three spreads are owned by Upfield and some have had their tub sizes shrunk down from 500g to 450g, with some of their kilogram tubs down shrinking to 900g.

Despite the tubs shrinking in size, the prices of the spreads have all remained the same - or risen, in some cases, as Bertolli has increased from £2.45 for 500g to £2.85 for a 450g tub.

The Mirror reports this is an example of "shrinkflation" - which means that a product has shrunk in size but still costs the same amount.

A spokeswoman for Upfield told The Grocer : "We are seeing significant commodity cost increases, including our raw ingredients. This has impacted our supply and has increased our manufacturing costs.

"To continue providing consumers with affordable and quality products we have had to reduce the amount of spread in our 500g tubs to 450g to ensure a reasonable price point and have clearly stated this on pack."

It comes after shoppers across the country were left outraged at the rising costs of a tub of Lurpak butter, with some 1kg tubs being sold for over £9.

The prices rises have forced some shoppers to switch to margarine spreads, such as Aldi's 99p Olive Spread that shoppers were calling "delicious".

Lurpak's owners - Arla Foods - issued a statement on their prices rises which they blamed on rising costs of fertiliser, animal food and fuel. The increased prices led to them increasing the prices across their dairy products.
