Flooding hits UK overnight with roads under water: Flood alerts for today as rain resumes

The UK was hit with strong winds, heavy rain and flooding overnight as the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings across the country.

Yellow weather warnings for rain are in force across the north-east of England and eastern Scotland, and amber warnings have been issued for north-east Scotland.

There are four flood warnings and 29 flood alerts across the UK, with some parts of Scotland experiencing almost a month’s worth of rainfall already this week, and more is expected for the weekend.

In Aberdeenshire, a woman was reportedly swept into the River Don on Friday, with police enquiries ongoing after being stood down overnight.

In the northeast of Scotland the council has urged residents to protect their homes from flooding with rest centres being opened in some parts of Aberdeenshire.

Travel disruptions are expected on much of the rail network across Scotland and the northeast with power cuts and flooding affecting a number of lines.

High amounts of rainfall across Yorkshire have led to several flood warnings being put in place with the River Ouse close to bursting its banks in York.

According to the Environment Agency, flood warnings are in place for the River Ouse in York city centre with "riverside properties" affected.

A severe flood warning means that "extensive flooding is expected to properties and businesses" and some roads will become "impassable".
