Flood watch warning for Victoria's east

Isolated rainfall totals could range from 60 to 100mm in parts of central and East Gippsland. (AAP)

Residents in Victoria's east have been warned of possible flooding ahead of a forecast wet weekend.

Isolated rainfall totals could possibly range from 60 to 100 millimetres in parts of central and East Gippsland on Saturday, as a low pressure system tracks south.

Rain is expected to intensify on Sunday, with 20 to 50mm tipped to fall across those regions as well as 50 to 80mm east of Bairnsdale. More than 100mm of rain could also fall in isolated areas that day.

In response, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood watch warning for Gippsland water catchments due to the likelihood of minor to moderate flooding on Sunday.

"If higher rainfall occurs, major flooding is possible in East Gippsland," it said on Friday.

Unlike parts of NSW and southeast Queensland, Victoria has avoided major flooding in recent months during the active La Nina weather pattern.
