Flood warning issued to Scots as five alerts in place across country

Scots have been warned that flooding could occur across the country with a number of alerts issued.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued five flood alerts and one flood warning covering areas including Ayrshire, Tayside and the Borders. It comes ahead of forecasts for heavy rain which will impact parts of Scotland today.

Flood alerts indicate that a flood could occur and allow communities to prepare. While flood warnings suggest that the chances of flooding are greater, it does not guarantee that it will happen.

SEPA has issued five flood alerts across Scotland, with areas near the Borders and in the Central Belt both affected.

Areas impacted are as follows:

  • Tayside
  • Ayrshire and Arran
  • Dumfries and Galloway
  • Scottish Borders
  • West Central Scotland

As well as the alerts, one area in Tayside - Innerpeffray to Bridge of Earn - has been placed under a flood warning. Currently there are no severe flood warnings in place.

The Met Office forecast for tonight states: "Showers, heavy at times, continuing although some clear spells likely across the east at times. Remaining windy with severe gales developing in northwest Scotland."

SEPA have previously stated: "There are steps you can take now to be flood prepared and reduce the damage and disruption flooding can have on your life."

When flooding occurs, you should know who to contact. This will likely be SEPA, your local authority or Scottish Water depending on the disruption caused.

You can find the agency's guidance on their website.
