Flood alert for River Tyne following heavy rain as Storm Franklin hits North East

People are being urged to avoid footpaths close to the River Tyne as a flood alert is put in place following heavy rain.

The Government issued the flood alert for the stretch of the River Tyne from Hexham to Wylam and its tributaries on Sunday night.

It comes as Storm Franklin - the third storm to hit the North East in a week - brings strong winds and heavy rain overnight and into Monday.

The flood alert warning says that areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low-lying land and roads near the River Tyne.

Members of the public are urged to avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.

River levels are expected to continue to rise tonight but will generally start falling in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Government said it is "closely monitoring the situation" but does not expect to issue any flood warnings.

A further update is expected at 10am on Monday morning.
