Five things we learned from Notts County's 3-2 win over Woking

Notts County just do not lose away to Woking, with the Magpies making it four away fixtures unbeaten against the Cardinals with a 3-2 victory at the Laithwaite Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A Ruben Rodrigues penalty coupled with a Cedwyn Scott brace ensured Luke Williams' side stayed top of the National League heading into their FA Cup fourth qualifying round fixture against Coalville Town next weekend.

Despite a nervy final five minutes after Reece Grego-Cox tucked away a late penalty for Woking, Notts made it three wins in the space of seven days, capping off a brilliant week for the club.

Following the game, here are five things we learned following the win at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

Cedwyn Scott performance

After saying before the fixture he wanted to score more, Scott added to his four goals already this season with two instinctive finishes to put the Magpies 3-1 up at the break.

But it wasn't the striker's clinical nature that impressed the most, but his overall play. As we have seen in recent weeks, the 23-year-old has operated in a slightly deeper position compared to last season, with roles reversed with Macaulay Langstaff from their time at Gateshead.

And Scott's overall performance was something to be admired. His determination and work ethic to win the ball back when Notts turned over possession was evidence of the ethos Williams has instilled in his short tenure at Meadow Lane.

On a number of occasions, the striker pressed the Woking midfield and won a number of challenges to turn possession over for his side and allow them to counter-attack when the Cardinals lost the ball in dangerous positions.

His goals further cemented a brilliant performance from the Notts number 19, producing an excellent finish to round of a scintillating Magpies move before slotting home one of the easier finishes of his time at Meadow Lane so far, remaining composed in what was a crucial point in the encounter.

It's reassuring to know that when your 15-goal striker is not having the easiest of times up front, you have someone like Scott within your ranks to get the goals to ensure the result swings in your favour. Those goals will have given him huge confidence after failing to score in his previous three fixtures.

High line vulnerability

It was an area that Phil Parkinson highlighted following their 1-0 defeat to the Magpies in midweek, with the Wrexham boss explaining Notts were lucky to concede just one goal from their previous two fixtures against Altrincham and the Dragons when playing their high line.

And that vulnerability was on show once again, with Padraig Amond exploiting that space in behind the back three on a number of occasions in the first half, almost creating goal-scoring opportunities.

The positioning of Sam Slocombe often accommodated the high defensive line we have seen from Williams' side this season, but it still could be an area of concern for the Magpies as the season progresses.

Woking were similar in their approach to the fixture, looking to press Notts at every given moment, and were successful in exploiting the space in behind Kyle Cameron and Richard Brindley in the first half but, ultimately, they were unable to conserve their energy into the second period with the back three comfortable throughout.

It's potentially an area to perfect ahead of Coalville with different personnel, as Williams hinting that both Aden Baldwin and Joel Taylor are closing in on a return for the Magpies, but their fixture against Maidstone in the National League the following Friday will pose another test for that high defensive line.

Clinical nature

In what was a bizarre game against Woking, it was ultimately the Magpies' clinical nature that ensured the three points returned to Nottingham yesterday afternoon.

After starting the game poorly, it was the away side who took the lead with Ruben Rodrigues confidently tucking away the penalty early on after Adam Chicksen was tripped in the area, with the full-back involved again five minutes later, delivering an inch-perfect cross on to the boot of Scott to double Notts' lead.

With James Daly capitalising on a mistake from Sam Slocombe, their two-goal lead was restored with Scott grabbing his second of the game after the ball fell kindly to the number 19 inside the Woking area.

And while Grego-Cox pulled a goal back for the Cardinals five minutes from time, Williams' side held on to remain top of the National League highlighting that, despite not playing well, taking those important chances was pivotal to remain at the summit of the table.

A week to remember

If Carlsberg did the perfect week, this would be it for the Magpies.

After coming away 3-1 winners at home to Altrincham in what was a tightly contested affair, their performance against Wrexham further highlighted their play-off ambitions this season, beating arguably their closest rival at Meadow Lane in midweek.

And while producing a similar performance from their match with the Robins against Woking on Saturday, Notts made it four games unbeaten in the league, holding a one-point lead at the top of the table.

It comes at a crucial point in the season so early on, with Chesterfield losing ground on the top two following their defeat to Eastleigh on Saturday which has opened up a four-point gap to the Spireites heading into the FA Cup weekend.

With seven goals scored, three conceded and sitting pretty at the top of the National League table, the Magpies can be happy with their work this week and enjoy a week-long break before their fixture with Coalville Town.

Jim O'Brien injury update

As expected, midfielder Jim O'Brien missed the game against Woking after suffering an injury against Wrexham in midweek.

Geraldo Bajrami was his replacement in midweek and started against the Cardinals, producing a dominant midfield display against Darren Sarll's side.

But following the fixture, Williams was able to provide an update on the Scotsman, explaining a time scale on the midfielder's return to the matchday squad.

"It is probably better than what we hoped," said Williams.

"Now we just need to be accurate with the work, Jim will give everything and already is to make sure he is back at the correct time so we are positive about that.

"It is at the very top of the thigh, it is a small tear but we can recover Jim in a decent amount of time.

"It is roughly six weeks, four weeks if everything is incredible, six weeks is normal."
