Five midfielders Manchester United could look at as further additions after signing Mason Mount

Manchester United should soon make Mason Mount their first signing of the summer.

It's been a long time coming but Erik ten Hag has all but got his top midfield target in the bag. United had been left frustrated after seeing three bids for Mount rejected but eventually managed to break Chelsea's resolve by compromising on a guaranteed £55million fee with a possible £5million in add-ons.

Mount has agreed a five-year contract with United, completed his medical on Monday and was back at Carrington on Tuesday for his unveiling photoshoot. But with one midfielder signed, United are considering adding another.

Mount's arrival has opened the door for 30-year-old Fred to depart, with Fulham interested in the Brazilian who has a year remaining on his deal. United will now switch their attentions to a goalkeeper and striker but are keeping an eye on midfield targets with Scott McTominay's future also uncertain.

The academy graduate has been the subject of interest from Newcastle and West Ham this summer, although any move would be dependent on United getting an offer too good to refuse and whether McTominay wants to move on. As a result of the uncertainty around McTominay's future, United are monitoring defensive midfielders in case they need to make a move at any point in the window.

Here are five possible signings.

Sofyan Amrabat

Combative Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat has repeatedly been linked with United in recent years and speculation is once again growing that a move to Old Trafford could be on the cards. The 26-year-old was excellent in his side's run to the Europa Conference League final and particularly dazzled in Morocco's remarkable run to the World Cup semi-finals last year.

Amrabat has even worked with Ten Hag before, at Dutch side Utrecht in 2007, which could make the signing even more attractive.

Romeo Lavia

Coming through the ranks at Manchester City almost guarantees a level of quality but Romeo Lavia has gone one step further by establishing himself as a quality midfield operator. Southampton may have finished at the bottom of the table but the 19-year-old was their standout performer and is now being linked with a big-money move this summer.

Liverpool and Chelsea appear to be leading the race but United are also monitoring his situation in the window.

Moises Caicedo

Another player attracting a lot of attention ahead of a likely massive transfer is Moises Caicedo. The all-action defensive midfielder has flourished at Brighton and the Seagulls won't let him go for anything less than £80million.

United had the chance to sign Caicedo before he left Ecuador in 2021 but walked away from the deal when they grew concerned about the number of agents involved. Chelsea are thought to be favourites for his signature.

Ryan Gravenberch

If Ten Hag is still keen on signing players he has worked with in the past then Ryan Gravenberch may be tempting. The Dutchman was spoken of in the same breath as Jude Bellingham a year ago but his move to Bayern Munich last summer hasn't gone to plan, with game time extremely limited.

Gravenberch has already made his frustrations clear and if his game time doesn't improve he wants to move. He told ESPN: "I expected to play more minutes than I did. I thought I would get some more chances. It’s about just wanting to play, that’s the most important thing at my age. I hope this can happen at Bayern Munich, otherwise we’ll just have to look further." United could offer the perfect escape route.

Marcel Sabitzer

Marcel Sabitzer is a man already very familiar with United after he spent the second half of last season on loan in Manchester to offset an injury suffered by Christian Eriksen. The Austrian made a solid if unspectacular impact and it looked as though he could be signed permanently until an injury brought his season to a premature end.

United have seemingly moved on from Sabitzer since but he remains a potential option. The 29-year-old would be available on the cheap and may be more content in playing a squad role behind Mount, Casemiro and Eriksen in the pecking order.
