The Premier League has had another dramatic transfer window, but rather than consign it to the past and get on with the season at hand, we’re addressing the season’s burning question: In the Premier League’s 30 years, who is the greatest transfer of all time?
As part of our special award to celebrate the Premier League’s anniversary, Liverpool have five nominations out of the 30 in Mohamed Salah , Sadio Mane , Virgil van Dijk , Luis Suarez and Sami Hyypiä .
In a competitive fray unabashedly awash with nostalgia and baggie ‘90s shirts, it is testament to Liverpool’s recent elite transfer business that Salah, Mane and Van Dijk unequivocally make the cut. An epoch-defining trio inextricable from Liverpool’s trophy-laden triumphs, the three players have gone on to strike fear in attackers and defenders alike with their unflinching tenacity and composure, a microcosm of the behemoth constructed at Anfield in recent years.
And yet, some will argue that they cannot stand against the eternally snarling sensation that Suarez was from start to finish, even with the controversies. Boiled down to pure, unadulterated skill, Suarez too often offered an unachievable benchmark, gleefully dribbling the league into a disgusting dizzy.
Or does Hyypiä , Liverpool’s arguably best-ever bargain buy and a timely reminder that the players capable of transforming a squad into a Champions League winner don’t always wear £100m price tags, take centre stage?
