First snow hits Britain in wintry scenes after Met Office warnings and blizzard fears

The first major snowfall of winter has settled in parts of the UK today as dramatic pictures show hazardous scenes in Cumbria.

Temperatures have plummeted in recent days, and yesterday the Met Office put a yellow weather warning in place due to predicted snowfall of up to 10cm in Scotland - its first snow warning of the season.

It's set to get even colder as the week goes on, with temperatures set to nosedive from Wednesday, dropping below zero overnight across much of the country.

Today the Met Office said there will be widespread frost across in northern Scotland overnight, but the breeze will stop temperatures from falling too low.

Forecasters have warned up to 10cm of snow could fall amid fears of strong blizzards in Scotland next week.

And Northern Ireland and parts of northern England will also be hit by snow showers.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering the north of the country on Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to plummet.

Experts say they expect between 2cm and 5cm of snow to settle in lower areas, which could rise to 10cm at higher levels. Combined with strong northerly winds and blizzard conditions, it could cause travel chaos.

The Met Office said: "Showers will fall as snow to low levels on Wednesday. Accumulations of 2-5 cm are possible at lower levels, with 5-10 cm above 200 metres, with some drifting and blizzard conditions in the strong northerly winds."

The weather warning is in place all day on Wednesday and covers Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar and Orkney & Shetland.

Scotland is likely to face the first snowfall of the season over the next couple of days, thanks to a wintry storm named the 'Troll of Trondheim'.

Forecasters have said it's down to a spell of low pressure originating from Norway which will hit the UK, resulting in plunging temperatures and snow.
