First picture of tragic 16-year-old killed in Scots motorway crash

A 16-year-old girl who was killed in a horrific motorway crash last week has been named as Sophie Laing.

The Cumbernauld teenager was a passenger in the rear of a car that collided with another vehicle on the M73 near the Gartcosh Junction on Saturday January 28 at around 1.30pm. She and the 62-year-old male driver of the vehicle were both rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow following the smash.

Sadly, she could not be saved and later died of her injuries. A 42-year-old man was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and has since been released pending further enquiries.

Police are continuing to appeal for information relating to the crash, which closed the motorway for several hours while investigations were carried out. Tributes have been left to the teen on social media.

One read: "I'll miss you getting on my bus and having a laugh and your cheeky wee smile. I'll always remember you and keep the Xmas card you gave me...rest in peace Sophie my wee pal."

Another said: "Sincere condolences to Sophie's family and friends. Such a beautiful young girl gone far too soon."

Constable Paul Mallon, Lanarkshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Sophie’s family and friends at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may have information which could assist to contact officers.”

Police are urging witnesses, or anyone who has dash cam footage of the area at the time, to get in touch with officers on 101, quoting reference 1665 of 28 January, 2023.
