First picture of 'one in a million' boy, 16, who drowned in quarry

The mum of a 16-year-old boy who died in a quarry over the weekend has released a moving tribute to her son.

Lancashire Police, along with North West Ambulance Service and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, attended Dawber Delph in Appley Bridge at around 9.40pm on Saturday, July 9, after a report that a male had entered the water and got into difficulty. Following a search of the water, the body of a 16-year-old was found and was later identified as Jamie Lewin from Southport.

The mum of the teen, Steph Lewin, has now released a touching tribute to her son. She said: "Jamie was a promising boxer who loved life and had so much to look forward to. He was so loved by everyone.

"He touched so many peoples’ lives in such a short time, he really did spread himself far. He really was one in a million. I'm so happy I was his mum. He was only 16 and so full of life and so happy."

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course. Our thoughts remain with Jamie’s family at this time."

Yesterday, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper called for the quarry to be drained urgently. She said: "I am saddened by the tragic news that a teenager has died in the East Quarry in Appley Bridge. My deepest sympathies are with his family and friends.

"Although the police, owners and local authorities have consistently done what they can to secure this Quarry to advise and prevent people from swimming in the lake, the size of the site has proved this difficult. Whenever we have a period of good weather, this has led to young people ignoring advice and warnings not to swim in the Quarry.

“The Quarry must now be drained as a matter of urgency, and I am calling on Lancashire County Council to give the final approval to any pending applications for the developers to begin draining the Quarry.”
