Killer repeatedly stabs teacher, 24, to death in her flat during lockdown

A man has admitted stabbing a teacher to death in her flat during the coronavirus lockdown.

Zbigniew Soj, 24, pleaded guilty to murdering Borbala ‘Bori’ Benko, 24, at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

Paramedics raced to Bori's flat in Bradford City Centre, West Yorks. at 5.06am last November following reports of a stabbing.

She was found in her bedroom with multiple stab wounds and despite the paramedics' best effort, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

During a case management hearing yesterday, Richard Wright QC, Soj’s barrister, entered a guilty plea for the murder of Bori and another guilty plea for the attempted murder of another woman.

He suggested that Soj's sentence could take place on May 19 when all the relevant material was gathered.

Mark McKone, QC, prosecuting, said the victim's impact statements would be available on that date.

Judge Jonathan Rose asked for Soj to be present in court for the sentencing hearing and told him to expect a life sentence.

Bori came to the United Kingdom from Hungary as a youth worker in 2016.

And in the days after the murder, her family issued a statement saying how much she would be missed.

They said: "Bori will be very sadly missed by all her family and friends both in Hungary and the wider community, along with the staff and children at the school where she worked.”

Bradford charity Global Café, where Bori worked as a volunteer, said at the time they were “devastated beyond words" at the news of her death.

Bori had completed her Early Years practitioner studies through Bradford College and Bradford University.

Her dreams to start her own special educational needs school in Hungary were cut short and she died just a week before she was due to receive her award.

A touching tribute was paid at Bradford College's most recent graduation ceremony.

Friends and family of Bori listened as lecturer Debbie Rolls read a speech saying: “We are proud that Bori studied with us at Bradford College.

“We are deeply saddened that she is no longer with us. She radiated joy, concern for others and had a real passion for working with children.

“Today Bori should have graduated. It is fitting that we use this opportunity to celebrate her life. To travel to a new country and complete a degree is an accomplishment in itself."

After news of her death emerged, a fundraising page was set up in her memory.

The target to repatriate Bori's body to her original homeland of Hungary for her funeral was reached a month after her death.
