The first flight taking UK migrants to Rwanda has been postponed after a court intervention this evening. The Government's controversial and radical plan to tackle illegal Channel crossings was due to start today.
But Government sources have confirmed to the PA news agency that due to last minute interventions by the European Court of Human Rights all migrants have been removed from the plane and the flight to Rwanda will not take off as scheduled tonight.
Earlier, Boris Johnson suggested lawyers representing migrants were “abetting the work of criminal gangs” as last-ditch court hearings took place ahead of the first flight sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. The Prime Minister insisted the Government would not be deterred from its policy, despite criticism from the Church of England and reportedly also from the Prince of Wales.
