First-ever Holi celebrations set to take place in north Dublin

An event celebrating the festival of Holi is set to take place for the first time ever in north Dublin.

The festival signals the arrival of spring and it commemorates the victory of the god Vishnu over the demon king Hiranyakashipu in Hindu mythology. Indian Ladies in Ireland is set to bring a slice of India to Dublin as part of an exciting event marking the festival on Sunday, March 5 in Raheny.

Every year, communities across India come together to celebrate Holi using coloured powder, water guns, and water balloons. There is plenty of singing and dancing to commemorate the joyous event as people partake in delicious food and drink.

Supriya Singh of Indian Ladies in Ireland said: "This is the first-ever Holi event that will be taking place in the northside." Supriya said the group has some amazing events planned before adding: "March 8 is International Women’s Day and we will be hosting a classical dance performance to mark that.

"We will also have a free stall where women entrepreneurs will be able to promote their businesses." And as with Indian celebrations, there will be plenty of mouth-watering delicacies on offer including chicken biryani, pain puri, dahi wada, vada pav, pastries, and more.

Supriya said all attendees will be given coloured powder that is included in the ticket price of €11.70. Speaking about the colours, Supriya said: "The coloured powder is safe for your skin and nobody is allowed to bring their own colours."
