Firestone has a new tire that’s made for America’s most popular vehicles. It’s called the Destination LE4, the successor to its best-selling Destination LE3, and the company designed it specifically for crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks.
The Firestone Destination LE4, an all-season highway tire, features several enhancements over the outgoing tire. Engineers optimized the rib widths to extend the tire’s life and paired them with deeper initial tread depth. Thinner 3D sipes improved its wet and light-snow performance.
Inside the carcass, the LE4 has high-strength body piles and steel cords. Firestone also achieved greater ingredient consistency throughout the rubber compound. This boosts tread wear and grip.
Measuring Up
Firestone’s own testing says the new LE4 should last 16 percent longer than the LE3 it replaces. Compared to the competition, the new tire will last 9 percent longer than the General Grabber H/T and 43 percent longer than the BFGoodrich Advantage Control HT tire.
The LE4 also delivers improved stopping performance over its predecessor. The new tire recorded a 2.6 percent reduction in dry stopping distance (2.0 feet shorter) compared to the LE3s.
The LE4 stopped 8.0 feet shorter than the Toyo Open Country H/T II tire in both wet and dry conditions. Compared to the BFGoodrich Advantage Ctrl HT, the Firestone stopped 2.0 feet shorter in the dry and 4.0 feet shorter in the wet.
Firestone will offer the LE4 in 65 sizes, fitting 15- to 22-inch rims. The company says the tire will fit cars like the Mazda CX-5, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Nissan Armada.
