Huge plumes of thick black smoke were seen rising above Newcastle city centre this morning as firefighters tackled a blaze at the city's heliport.
Crews from Newcastle and Byker were called to a van fire at Newcastle City Heliport, located near Scotswood Road, at around 10.15am on Thursday, May 4.
Northumbria Police also attended the scene and firefighters were able to put out the blaze by 10.52am.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) spokesman said: “We can confirm that earlier this morning three appliances responded to a vehicle fire just off Scotswood Road in Newcastle.
“Our control team received the initial emergency call at 10.15am with the crews in attendance being from Byker and Newcastle Central community fire stations. The first crew was on scene within five minutes of the call to control.
“Upon getting access to the incident location our crews quickly assessed the fire. Firefighters extinguished the van fire using water jets.
“Our blue light colleagues at Northumbria Police were also in attendance. Our crews made the area safe after extinguishing the fire then left the scene at 10.52am."
