Firefighters tackled a blaze at a tower block in Tameside this evening.

By the time crews arrived, the flames had partly been put out.

Images taken at the scene this evening show a fire engine outside the building, which is a short distance from Ashton-under-Lyne bus station.

A section of the exterior of the building appeared to have suffered smoke damage as a result of the fire.

It is not yet known whether anyone has been injured.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At around 6pm this evening (23 February), we were called to reports of a fire involving a mattress on the seventh floor of Assheton House – a ten storey high rise building on Water Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.
