'Fire, strength, renewal' comes to life through art

As people at Australia's biggest Indigenous cultural event walk by the bunggul (dance) grounds, artist Molly Hunt is making this year's Garma Festival theme come to life.

The Balanggarra and Yolngu woman is painting a mural representing the elements of "Fire, Strength and Renewal".

"The colours represent the Kimberley (in Western Australia), where I'm from, the red, yellow and the pink," Ms Hunt told AAP.

"All the elements represent the theme: the fire, the strength of the black female, and the brolgas represent renewal.

"All these different elements encompass passion, strength, the fire burning for our fight for our country, for our mob.

"The brolgas dancing represent transformation and change, respect for land and all the things we want to live a sustainable life on country."

The mural has been gaining interest from festival-goers and Ms Hunt said she's often approached as she's painting.

It's something she loves, being able to connect with people from all over the country while she works.

"Doing a mural is like therapy, I see it as a form of connection," Ms Hunt said.

"So as I'm here painting people come up to me and sit down and have a yarn.

"Not only are we here painting I'm able to connect and yarn with people from all pockets of the country."

She hopes the many children and young people in the festival grounds at Gulkula in northeast Arnhem Land might be inspired by seeing her work.

"Hopefully it plants a bit of a seed and inspires and empowers and says you can really do it if you want to do it," she said.
