Fire service statement as crews tackle 'significant' fire involving 900 tonnes of rubbish in Newark

Firefighters have issued a statement over a fire that's engulfed 900-tonnes of scrap in Newark. Six crews are in attendance but there have been no injuries.

The incident, reported just after 8.30am on Thursday, May 26, is understood to have taken place at Briggs Metals, Great North Road. Residents nearby have been advised to close windows and doors.

As of 10.30am, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said fire engines would soon start to leave the scene. Firefighters also confirmed that no injuries had been reported.

A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: "It is a significant incident but we have not yet declared it a major incident. It is 900-tonnes.

"We still do not know the extent of the hazards. At this time we are still in the early stages of containing the incident."
