Fire crews in hazmat suits called to Scots building over 'strong chemical smell'

A Fife street was locked down by emergency services after alarmed members of the public reported a strong smell of ammonia.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene on Somerville Street in Burntisland at around 8.30am.

First responders wearing white hazmat suits were seen entering the property while a large cordon was put in place.

Police Scotland confirmed they were in attendance to help with road traffic management while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service carried out their investigations.

There are no reported injuries and a domestic fridge has been removed from the property as a precaution.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.30am on Thursday, February 3 to reports of a strong smell of ammonia from a building on Somerville Street, Burntisland.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and specialist resources to the area.

“Firefighters removed a domestic fridge to a safe area and crews are still at the scene.”
