Fire breaks out at Wexford General Hospital as emergency services rush to the blaze

A fire has broken out at Wexford General Hospital with reports of smoke billowing from one floor.

Firefighters are currently at the scene and Gardaí are advising people to stay away from the area.

The news was shared by Wexford County Council in a post on Twitter, where they urged people to avoid the area, adding that anyone who is living in close proximity to the hospital to close both their windows and doors as well as their air ventilation.

The post read: “Important. Due to a fire incident in Wexford General Hospital, we ask that everyone avoid the area!!

“Anyone living in close proximity, close windows and doors and turn off all air ventilation!!!”

The Gardaí also confirmed that emergency services are currently attending the scene of a fire at Wexford General Hospital.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of an incident at Wexford General Hospital.

"There is no further information at this stage. Updates will be available in due course."

Pictures of the blaze have also been shared across Twitter.

David Hall, the owner of private ambulance company, Lifeline Ireland, also confirmed that ambulances had been dispatched to the scene and revealed that they were working with both the National Ambulance Service and the HSE to help.

In a post on Twitter, Hall wrote: "Significant fire at Wexford hospital. Following a request, We at LifelineIreland are dispatching ambulances and working with the National Ambulance Service and the HSE to help. When things go wrong in health everyone steps up."
