The Finnish government has announced that it will be extending the closure of its long border with Russia for an additional two months, until April 14th. The decision was made due to concerns over what they describe as Russia's 'hybrid operation' of funneling migrants towards Finland.
The border, stretching 1,340 kilometers (832 miles), was initially closed late last year after an unusually high number of migrants, approximately 1,300, arrived without proper documentation or visas since September. These migrants primarily come from the Middle East and Africa and have sought asylum in Finland, a country with a population of 5.6 million.
The Finnish government has labeled this orchestrated migration from Russia as a serious threat to the country's national security and public order. The authorities have not observed any signs indicating that Russia is halting its actions, but instead, they believe that the situation may continue for some time.
According to Interior Minister Mari Rantanen, there are currently hundreds, if not thousands, of migrants staying near the border on the Russian side, waiting for an opportunity to cross into Finland. This situation has prompted Finland to maintain the closure of all eight border crossing points for people, which have been shut since December 15th. However, the southeastern rail checkpoint for cargo trains in Vainikkala remains open, at least for now.
Finland has previously accused Russia of intentionally directing migrants towards its border, an allegation that the Kremlin has denied. Russia has expressed regret over the border closures implemented by Finland.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's government originally decided to close the border with Russia in November, citing security concerns and Russia's hybrid warfare. Although two selected checkpoints were briefly opened on a trial basis, the influx of migrants continued.
Finland plays a crucial role as the European Union's external border in the north and contributes significantly to NATO's northeastern flank.
The decision to extend the border closure highlights the Finnish government's determination to address the ongoing challenge of unauthorized migration and maintain the country's national security.
