Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth's combat was already slick, but Square Enix is calling Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's iteration "perfected" at this year's Summer Game Fest.
Remake hit the gas on the turn-based combat that the original Final Fantasy 7 had, giving you direct control over your squad as you take on monsters and Shinra lackeys. In a clever nod to the OG system, it also let you pause combat and queue up attacks to setup powerful combos.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth pushed it forward with several small tweaks and a new ability to pair characters together to unleash devastating synergy attacks. Next year, Revelation will add the ability to change how each character is played through a "FIT" system where different outfits determine their skills. Tifa, for example, can put on some robes and ignite enemies as a black mage.
Cid and Vincent will join the party, and both look like fun characters to build a strategy around. Vincent can transform into a violent beast and pick up Cid to let him smash enemies with his polearm out of harm's way. The addition of these two alone suggests Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's combat will get even faster than it was in Rebirth, and it might demand a little more finesse as you face off against new monsters and eventually Sephiroth.
Square Enix stopped short of going into full detail on all the changes to the combat system, but I'm sure we'll hear more as the game gets closer to release. Everything it showed was mighty impressive, speaking as someone who hasn't gotten around to Rebirth yet. I've got time to dig into it: Final Fantasy 7 Revelations won't be out until spring 2027.
