Filton Avenue roadworks causing traffic 'day and night'

It's safe to say there's plenty of roadworks in and around Bristol at the moment and in the Horfield area they seem to be popping up every week. Residents here already have to deal with traffic from the extensive works being carried out to various streets along Muller Road, where a bus gate is being installed and, this week, residents along Filton Avenue and Wessex Avenue have had to also navigate four-way traffic controls on a busy junction.

According to maps on One.Network, the temporary four-way traffic lights - which include temporary crossing facilities for pedestrians - began on October 2 and were due to finish on Thursday (October 6). From then, more work will be carried out "with minimal carriageway incursion" further down on Lockleaze Road until October 10.

The work is being carried out by Bristol Water, according to its own roadworks map. And, while it isn't scheduled to last for much longer, some of the local residents have been put a bit out of place by the ongoing works in the area.

With Horfield Health Centre and Filton Avenue Primary School just across the road, a number of residents on the school run yesterday morning felt that roads were a lot busier and journeys by car had been impacted, with the messages from those in charge of the roadworks themselves, which warned of 'likely delays', ringing true for most.

One mum, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We walk to school but the roads definitely look busier than usual because of the queues. They do seem to move but there seems to be a line of traffic throughout the day and even at night - not just during rush hour."

And another local resident, who lives on one of the roads affected, told Bristol Live: "I've been debating parking my car away from my house this week, or else when I get ready to leave to go to work, I'm at risk of being stuck in my parking spot for a while. It takes me a bit longer to leave, definitely, and joining the queue of traffic can be a lot harder - especially when people don't let you out."

A Bristol Water spokesperson said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by essential maintenance work in this area. Our crews have been replacing lead pipes and the traffic lights were necessary to safely manage our works, as agreed with the council.

"The lights will be cleared later this afternoon after we’ve completed reinstating the road surface."
