A Filipina woman, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, who had been on death row in Indonesia and was nearly executed by firing squad in 2015, has returned home to the Philippines after a long-awaited repatriation. Veloso spent almost 15 years in prison for drug trafficking but was granted a last-minute reprieve, allowing her to share her story of being deceived by a criminal syndicate into becoming an unwitting drug courier.
Upon her arrival at Manila's airport, Veloso was greeted by emotional cheers and tears from relatives and supporters, including her two sons who were just 1- and 6-years old when she was arrested in 2010. A huge banner reading 'Welcome home Mary Jane' was displayed as she was welcomed back.
Veloso's transfer from Indonesia to the Philippines was made possible by a recent agreement between the two countries, ensuring her safety and removing the possibility of execution. The Philippines, being a predominantly Catholic nation, has long abolished the death penalty.
Despite the joyous reunion, Veloso's family is still hoping for presidential clemency for her. Supporters gathered at the Correctional Institution for Women in Metro Manila, chanting 'Clemency for Mary Jane' as she arrived at the facility.
Expressing her gratitude, Veloso thanked both the Indonesian and Philippine governments for their efforts in facilitating her return. She acknowledged the support she received during her incarceration and expressed her belief in a positive future ahead.
Officials from both countries praised the successful diplomatic efforts that led to Veloso's repatriation, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and human rights.
Veloso, who will soon turn 40, was arrested in 2010 in Indonesia for drug trafficking after being deceived by a recruiter. Her case sparked international outcry, leading to her temporary reprieve from execution in 2015.
Indonesia, known for its strict drug laws, has a significant number of individuals on death row for drug-related offenses. Veloso's return marks a significant moment in the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Indonesia, showcasing the trust and friendship between the two nations.
As Veloso begins her quarantine in Manila, her family looks forward to spending Christmas Eve with her, celebrating her return and looking towards a hopeful future.
