FIFA insist fans at World Cup will now be able to wear rainbow symbols

Qatari authorities have assured FIFA that fans at the World Cup will not be prohibited from taking rainbow flags and clothing into stadiums following a series of high-profile incidents.

Wales fans, including WalesOnline columnist Professor Laura McAllister, were forced to give up their rainbow bucket hats before entering the stadium ahead of the match between Wales and the USA, while an American journalist claimed he was initially denied entry on account of wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a rainbow.

Now, the Football Association of Wales has issued an update, saying: "In response to the FAW, FIFA has confirmed that fans with Rainbow Wall bucket hats and rainbow flags will be allowed entry to the stadium for Cymru's match against Iran on Friday. All World Cup venues have been contacted and instructed to follow the agreed rules & regulations."

It comes after some Wales fans reported being told to remove bucket hats featuring the red, yellow and green colours of their team after security presumably confused them for rainbow hats.

It has all posed a problem for FIFA, who had previously insisted before the tournament that this was a World Cup for everyone.

But the governing body's position has perhaps been thrown into question by their own actions, after they threatened seven associations with possible sanctions over the wearing of the One Love armband, which was clearly intended to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and opposition to discrimination.

FIFA had suggested that any player wearing the armband would be shown an automatic yellow card, a move which infuriated the FAW, who responded by putting rainbow flags up at their training base. Germany also responded with a silent protest ahead of their defeat to Japan, covering their mouths in what seemed a pointed message to FIFA.
