Fianna Fail Councillor elected as new Lord Mayor of Dublin

Fianna Fail Councillor Daithi de Roiste has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin following a vote at Dublin City Council's annual meeting this evening.

Cllr de Roiste will become the city's 355th Lord Mayor, succeeding the Green Party's Caroline Conroy. Cllr de Roiste was born and raised in Ballyfermot, Dublin.

A member of Fianna Fail, he was elected to Dublin City Council in 2014 at the age of 26 and was subsequently re-elected in 2019, representing the Ballyfermot/Drimnagh local electoral area. He is the son of Michael and Catherine Roche and he has one sister, Emma.

He is married to Amy de Roiste since 2016. Cllr de Roiste is a member of DCC Strategic Policy Committees (SPC’s) on Finance and Planning and a member of the Citywide Joint Policing Committee since 2014.

Cllr de Roiste is also a member of the budget consultative group of the Council. He graduated with a degree in History from University College Dublin and a Masters in Public Affairs from DIT (TUD).

Cllr de Roiste was joined in the council chamber this evening by his wife Amy, father Michael, grandmother Kathleen, and other family members, said he was “humbled and deeply grateful to be elected”. He wrote on Twitter afterward: "Tonight I was honored to be elected the 355th Lord Mayor of Dublin.

"I am truly humbled with the support I received from my colleagues tonight." Cllr de Roiste will be mayor until next June.

Fianna Fail Councillor Clare O’Connor was elected the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin at tonight’s meeting.
