Feyenoord manager told to ‘aim higher’ than Leeds United amid Javi Gracia uncertainty

Feyenoord legend Mario Been has urged manager Arne Slot to look beyond Leeds United this summer. Reports have linked the 44-year-old with a move to Elland Road at the end of the season.

Despite Javi Gracia only just taking the reins, his arrival was announced on a “flexible contract” - meaning Leeds could be back on the manager hunt by May. Just one win in four games has hardly been the new manager bounce supporters were hoping for when the Spaniard was appointed.

Up-and-coming coach Slot is making waves with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. In his first full season in charge, he has the club on course to secure their 16th league title - losing just once all campaign.

Speaking to Voetbal International, former Feyenoord midfielder Been compared Slot to Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and suggested he can sign for a better team than Leeds. He said: “I see him at the same level as Erik ten Hag. I think he should have a higher reach than Leeds. He can take it a step further. He can be a little pickier.

“I think one thing will be very decisive (in deciding his future) is achieving Champions League football. If Feyenoord are able to become the champions, and therefore participate in the Champions League, then Arne will stay for another year. Then there would be so much financially possible that he can really strengthen the team.”
