Fern Britton reveals rift which led to split from her first husband

Fern Britton has revealed that taking a Mensa test led to her divorcing her first husband.

The TV presenter, 64, admits that her passing the test when ex-hubby Clive Jones didn't caused a rift in their relationship.

The IQ test allows people to join the High IQ Society if they score in the top two per cent of the population and Clive - who Fern shares three children with - was less than impressed that she secretly took part.

Speaking on the Walking The Dog with Emily Dean podcast, the former This Morning host said: "He had this degree and I don’t. I secretly went off and did the Mensa.

"I lied, I said I was going somewhere else, and it took a day to do this test. I passed — and quite well too."

She continued: "'Then he was furious so he did it because he’s got a huge brain. But he’s not a problem solver and he didn’t get it. So an immense rift opened."

It's then that Fern admits came the end of their 12-year marriage and after tying the knot in 1988 they went their separate ways in 2000.

In the same year, Fern married celebrity chef Phil Vickery and the pair share 20-year-old daughter Winnie. Fern and Phil split in 2020.

She continued to tell the podcast she never had any idea how high her IQ was until she took the test and says she suffers from imposter syndrome after penning 10 books in a little over a decade.

And she believes she could have presented more serious programme if she had taken it upon herself to take her career more serious.

She added: "Some people think, "Oh she’s too stupid" but I’m bright actually."

Fern had previously confessed that she missed being best friends with her ex Phil. Speaking to Weekend Magazine she admitted the pair's romance had unfortunately run its course.

"We had a wonderful time," she said. "We were the best of friends. And I miss that friendship.

"But there comes a point when the children are substantially off your hands and you look at each other and wonder where you’re going to go from here."
