Fermanagh GAA club’s 10 million steps for teen killed in road crash

A Co Fermanagh community has come together to celebrate the life of a teenager who was tragically killed in December.

Caitlin Hogg, 13, died after a collision with a car when she was on the way home from school in early December.

A dedicated and talented player with her local GAA club, Kinawley, the club is now running a ‘10 million steps for Caitlin’ event which will see her teammates raising funds for the Air Ambulance in her memory.

Aine Haren from the club says Caitlin’s death had a ‘devastating’ impact on the community, and that she will be remembered fondly by everyone in Kinawley.

“Caitlin was killed in a car accident and it was devastating to the community as a whole,” Aine said.

“We’ve decided now to try and do something in Caitlin’s memory and to bring the community together, and help her family.

“She just had this generous, loving personality and she was always at the pitch helping out.

“Her wee smile just lit up the room, it’s the only way to describe her. She was just such a positive, happy young girl.”

Caitlin’s family, including her mum and dad and three younger siblings, have been joining in the challenge as well and Aine said their courage is inspiring everyone in Kinawley daily.

“Caitlin’s family are inspiring us with their courage and their strength every day,” Aine added.

“To support them we have organised our 10 million steps for Caitlin. All the girls in the club from first to seventh year are counting their steps for the next six weeks and we’re hoping to get 10 million.

“We’re walking Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and the numbers we have had out from the club has been unreal.

“Even with the bad weather we are getting huge numbers and it’s just a really good support to the girls out walking, the whole community is coming together.

“It’s really positive and it’s creating a really good buzz in what is a really terrible situation. It’s nice to be able to do something positive in her memory.”
