A Ferguson police officer is currently fighting for his life after being assaulted during protests on Friday night. The incident occurred following several days of events commemorating the 10-year anniversary of Michael Brown's tragic killing by a Missouri officer.
Protesters were initially allowed to block multiple streets near the Ferguson Police Department, and the demonstrations remained peaceful for most of the evening. However, the situation escalated when some individuals began violently shaking the fence at the police station, as reported by Chief Troy Doyle during a Saturday news conference.
Chief Doyle mentioned that despite the provocations, the police did not react initially and allowed the protesters to shake the fence. However, the situation took a turn when the fence was broken, and property at the police department's parking lot was destroyed. Subsequently, an arrest team was deployed to make arrests for destruction of property, leading to a violent confrontation with protesters.
During the altercation, Officer Travis Brown sustained a severe brain injury and is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Chief Doyle expressed deep concern for the officer's well-being and highlighted the emotional toll of the incident.
The assault on Officer Brown occurred as he was attempting to arrest a suspect who had vandalized the police station's fence. The suspect charged at Officer Brown, causing him to suffer a head injury. Two other officers were also injured during the protests, with one sustaining an ankle injury and the other experiencing abrasions.
The suspect responsible for Officer Brown's assault, along with several other protesters, are now in custody. St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell announced that charges for resisting arrest, assault, property damage, and other offenses are being pursued against the individuals involved.
