A Black police officer, Travis Brown, was critically injured during a protest in Ferguson marking the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's death. Brown, who joined the Ferguson police force earlier this year, wanted to make a difference from within the department, following in his father's footsteps as a police officer. He remains in critical condition at a St. Louis-area hospital after being attacked during what started as a peaceful demonstration.
The incident occurred when protesters began destroying a fence outside the police department, prompting Police Chief Troy Doyle to send officers to make arrests. Travis Brown was tackled by one of the protesters, causing him to fall backward and suffer a severe brain injury. The protester, Elijah Gantt, has been charged with assault, resisting arrest, and property damage.
