Female Cyclists Faced Strange Chest Checks at the Tour de France Over Claims of an Aerodynamic Edge

Ten minutes before their start times on August 4, riders at the Tour de France Femmes reported for equipment checks. Cycling had never run in quite this way before. Alongside the usual bike weighing, commissaires were examining jerseys for anything shaping the chest.

The stage was a 21-kilometer individual time trial from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon. The night before, a jury communique had warned that particular attention would be paid to article 1.3.032 of the UCI regulations, covering non-essential clothing or accessories "which could modify riders' morphology." The trigger was a report by Dutch outlet Wielerflits that several Women's WorldTeams believed a small number of riders were exploiting chest volume in time trials, padded bras included.

The physics behind the complaint is well documented in peer-reviewed literature. Whether anyone in that start area actually did it is a separate question, and no rider has been shown to have done so.

What a Chest Fairing Does to Moving Air

A fairing is any object added to a rider or bike purely to reduce drag. A chest fairing is placed between the chest and the jersey, changing the torso's shape so air flows more cleanly around the body.

In 2024, Bert Blocken of Heriot-Watt University, with Fabio Malizia and Thijs van Druenen, published a computational fluid dynamics analysis in the Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics. The largest fairing they modeled produced a 3.6 percent drag reduction and at least 0.78 seconds of time gain per kilometer. Over 21 kilometers, that is roughly 16 seconds, which in women's WorldTour racing is often the entire result. Blocken told reporters riders do not gain tens of seconds, but that "over 20- 30 km, it can make a decisive difference."

The practice is not new and is not confined to women. The 2024 paper notes fairings observed at the 2023 Tour de France individual time trial and the 2023 Glasgow Road World Championships. Triathletes have stuffed water bottles down jerseys for years. In June, the UCI prohibited jerseys with front pockets, saying nutrition carried there significantly altered body shape, and a male rider was disqualified from a French race days later.

The Garment Being Inspected Exists for a Medical Reason

Here is what makes this different from a sock-length dispute, and where the health story sits.

The breast has no muscle. It is tissue sitting in front of the pectorals, unattached to them, supported only by skin and Cooper's ligaments, thin fibrous sheets that weave between the glandular structures. Those ligaments stretch, and once overstretched, they do not recover. Researchers at the University of Portsmouth's Research Group in Breast Health, founded in 2005 and whose testing unit has assessed more than 700 sports bras on over 8,000 women in a decade, report that unsupported breast tissue can move up to 15 centimeters during an activity like running. The group's founder began the work after learning that more than half of women experience exercise-related breast pain.

A multi-phase intervention involving 142 UK female athletes across 27 sports preparing for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, published in Research in Sports Medicine, found that pre-intervention breast and bra knowledge was low, most athletes wore ill-fitting, loose bras offering limited support, and multiple problems were reported. After individual assessment and prescription, 97 percent rated their new bra better than the original and 17 percent reported improved performance.

A separate 2024 study in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living had 23 recreationally active women complete three 10-kilometer cycling time trials in different bras and found that neither support level nor breast volume changed performance, though larger breast volumes and high-support bras were associated with stronger sensations of chest tightness. Support, in other words, is not a performance shortcut. It is basic equipment.

That is the awkward geometry of this controversy. The item under inspection is simultaneously a piece of medical equipment and, if modified, a potential violation of the rules.

What Has Not Been Established

Almost everything, in terms of proof.

The allegation originated with teams, was reported by one outlet, and prompted a warning communique. No rider has been named, charged or sanctioned. It is not publicly known whether the checks found anything. Penalties for non-compliant clothing run from disqualification to a fine of 50 to 200 Swiss francs, and none appear to have been issued.

The rollout drew immediate criticism. The CPA riders' association wrote to the UCI about the lack of transparency around a sensitive, first-of-its-kind procedure issued late the previous night, urging that checks safeguard the dignity and privacy of every rider. Teams had asked that a female official handle any chest-area inspection, and one was assigned to the jersey check. As the Irish Times reported, the directive also drew accusations of sexism because no clothing checks were carried out either before or after the men's Tour de France time trial, despite fairings being documented in men's racing.

The research limits deserve stating. The Blocken analysis is a computational simulation of modeled fairings, not a measurement of padded sports bras on riders, and it did not test bra padding specifically. Its headline figure describes the largest fairing modeled, not a typical one. The Portsmouth breast-movement figures come from running rather than time-trial cycling positions, and the athlete bra study had no control group.

What remains is a governing body writing rules about an intimate garment on short notice, with no published protocol, in a sport that has spent years being told it under-invests in women's equipment research.

Key Questions Answered

What is a chest fairing?

An object placed between a cyclist's chest and jersey to alter body shape and reduce aerodynamic drag. UCI article 1.3.032 prohibits clothing or accessories that artificially modify a rider's morphology.

How much advantage could it give?

A 2024 computational study found that the largest modeled fairing produced a 3.6 percent drag reduction and a time saving of at least 0.78 seconds per kilometer, totaling roughly 16 seconds over 21 kilometers.

Was any rider caught?

No rider has been named, sanctioned, or shown to have violated the rule. Whether the checks found anything has not been made public.

Is this only a women's issue?

No. Fairings have been documented in men's racing, including at the 2023 Tour de France time trial. Critics noted no similar checks were run at the men's race this year.

Why do sports bras matter medically?

Breast tissue has no muscle and only weak natural support from skin and Cooper's ligaments. Unsupported movement can reach about 15 centimeters in running, and overstretched ligaments do not recover.

Do sports bras slow cyclists down?

A 2024 trial of 23 women completing 10-kilometer cycling time trials found that neither support level nor breast volume changed performance.

What happens next?

The UCI has not published a formal protocol for these checks. The riders' association has asked for greater transparency before any similar procedure is used again.
