Feisty Parsi woman unfurled first version of Tiranga in Germany in 1907, spent 35 years in exile, sold her jewellery and funded freedom fighters

Independence Day 2026: Long before India adopted the tricolour as its national flag, Madame Bhikaji Cama stood before an international audience in Germany and unfurled a flag representing India's struggle for freedom.

On August 22, 1907, Cama displayed an early version of the Indian national flag at the International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart. The flag featured green, saffron and red bands, with ‘Vande Mataram’ inscribed on it.
