Time is running out for players to secure status on the PGA Tour for next season.
The FedEx Cup Fall consists of seven Tour events – last week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship was the sixth – which provide players an opportunity to lock up or improve their positions in priority ranking and secure additional playing opportunities for the 2024 PGA Tour season, which returns to a calendar-year format from January to August.
The top 125 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings through this week’s RSM Classic will be exempt into all full-field events and the Players Championship in 2024.
Nos. 51-60 in the standings at the conclusion of the RSM Classic will qualify for two Signature Events in 2024 via The Next 10 (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational).
Here’s a closer look at who was up and who was down after the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Camilo Villegas
Two weeks ago, Villegas was booked to go to second stage of Q-School. He entered last week’s World Wide Technology Championship at No. 223 in the FedEx Cup standings with 13.661 FedExCup points on the season. A T-2 in Mexico and a win in Bermuda and Villegas is suddenly exempt for the next two seasons. He collected 500 points and moved from No. 147 to No. 75 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Matti Schmid
Schmid closed in 67 to finish third in Bermuda. He earned his career-best finish in his 35th start. He had only one top-10 on the PGA Tour this season – in January at the American Express – but he’s finding his game just in the nick of time.
The 25-year-old German native has been trending in the right direction, with a final-round 63 in Las Vegas and then finished runner-up in the DP World Tour’s Andalucia Masters. He began the week at No. 148 in the FedEx Cup Fall Standings and moved to No. 120.
Carl Yuan
Yuan has made the most of the fall portion of the schedule. He’s shot up from 151st at the end of the regular season to 125th in the standings. (He was No. 134 entering the week.)
After failing to record a single top-10 finish during the regular season, the 26-year-old native of China finished fourth in Bermuda. He also finished T-6 at the Sanderson Farms Championship last month. He’s heading into the RSM Classic as the Bubble Boy.
Ryan Moore
With a T-5 in Bermuda, Moore, 40, earned his best finish since the 2021 John Deere Classic (T2) and moved from 140 to No. 128 in the FedExCup standings. The five-time Tour winner is scheduled to play at the RSM Classic this week.
Ryan Palmer
After recording only one top-10 finish all season, Palmer is warming up. He has back-to-back top-10 finishes, a T-5 in Mexico and most recently a T-8 in Bermuda. Two weeks ago, he ranked 155th in the FedEx Cup; he enters the RSM Classic at No. 131.
Bubble Trouble
With three players moving to the right side of the top 125, three were bounced out. Henrik Norlander missed the cut and fell from No. 121 to No. 126. Maverick McNealy took the week off and dropped from No. 124 to No. 127. He’s playing next week but is eligible for a medical exemption after being sidelined with an injury for much of the season. C.T. Pan missed the cut in Bermuda and went from Bubble Boy to No. 129 and has work to do at Sea Island Resort this coming week.
The Next 10
Luke List climbed back inside the top next 10 with a T-20 finish in Bermuda. He improved three spots from No. 61 to No. 58. Stephan Jaeger, who is playing the RSM Classic, slipped on the wrong side of the cut off, dropping from No. 60 to No. 62. Ben Griffin moved up two spots from No. 56 to No. 54 and should be safe with one event left. Sam Ryder enters the final week of the FedEx Cup Fall as the bubble boy.
