During the past two years, Federal Reserve officials have consistently reached unanimous decisions on monetary policy in 16 consecutive meetings. However, this streak of agreement was broken on Wednesday when Fed Governor Michelle Bowman dissented from the majority decision.
While the majority of officials voted for a half-point rate cut, Bowman opted for a quarter-point reduction, which has now been implemented. This marked the first instance in which Bowman was the sole dissenter among the 11 officials who participated in the vote.
Despite Bowman's dissent, it is important to note that discussions among the officials during the two-day monetary policy meeting were intense. The details of these deliberations are expected to be disclosed in three weeks when the Fed releases a summary of this month's meeting.
