Federal health officials have closed the investigation into a multistate infant botulism outbreak linked to powdered infant formula, ending an inquiry that began in June with four hospitalized babies in three states and no deaths. CDC marked the investigation status as closed on August 27 and stated plainly that the outbreak is over.
The more consequential finding is not the closure itself. It is what federal investigators concluded about where the contamination came from. CDC said data indicate "a common source of contamination" linking this outbreak to a larger 2025 outbreak tied to a different brand of powdered formula.
