Federal health officials have closed the multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled shell eggs, and the final tally is considerably larger than the one the public last saw. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted its final outbreak update on September 3, 2026, reporting 134 confirmed illnesses across 18 states and 34 hospitalizations. No deaths were reported.
That is 36 more illnesses, one more state, and eight more hospitalizations than the figures that stood through most of the summer, when the count was 98 illnesses in 17 states with 26 hospitalizations. CDC put the hospitalization rate at 35 percent among patients whose hospitalization status was known, which works out to 34 of the 134 confirmed cases overall.
