A federal judge delivered a blistering rebuke to Trump administration lawyers after 430 trees were cut down at a historic Washington DC golf course over a holiday weekend, demanding answers about who authorised the operation and why the court received so little warning.

'You did not do your best! You did your absolute worst!' US District Judge Ana Reyes told Justice Department attorney Marissa Ann Piropato during a heated hearing on Monday, 12 October.
