Fears of spike in UK road crashes after clocks go back

There is a warning that the number of road collisions in the UK could jump by more than a fifth when the clocks go back this weekend. British Summer Time ends at 2am on Sunday, October 30 this year.

Research by Tesco Bank Motor Insurance showed that claims for road accidents jumped by 22% in the week after the clocks went back in 2021. The findings are based on a comparison of the number of claims in the week before the clocks go back, with the week after.

Tesco Bank urges drivers to take extra care on the roads and claims director Dave Thompson has shared his top tips on winter driving. He said: “The clocks going back plunges evenings into darkness and as drivers adapt to the changed conditions, there is a rise in the number of road accident claims.
