Fears 'Fast and Furious' drivers could cause fatal accident in Sneinton

Neighbours have condemned 'Fast and Furious' drivers who they have warned could cause a fatal accident on their road. Nottinghamshire Police carried out checks on Colwick Road and Cardale Road, in Sneinton, on August 4 after residents complained about speeding.

People on Colwick Road said they were worried about problem drivers, with some warning accidents were inevitable. Nicola Smith, 38, who lives on Colwick Road and works at a restaurant, said: "It's just normal now and you get it everywhere. You get younger ones shooting down here.

"It's a long and straight road and you get people who definitely aren't doing the speed limit. It's a problem on this road."

Another Sneinton local, who did not want to be named, felt "someone could get killed" by speeding drivers on the road. And she compared the drivers to those in the Fast and Furious action film series, known for its all-star cast including the likes of Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel.

The Sneinton resident said: "It's the younger ones showing off like they are in Fast and Furious. People will hit 80mph down here. Someone could get killed on here someday. Lots of off-road bikes come round and make that funny noise and those electric scooters will end up knocking someone over.

"There's an old people's home and kids are running about. I feel like someone is going to mount the pavement - they seem to race to beat the train."

Omar Ahmed, 32, from Sneinton, said: "They do go fast on this road. There might be an accident soon. There are loud bikes that come down here as well. It's not all the time, everyday but it is worse on the weekends and nights."

During the recent operation, which saw police check the speed of 100 vehicles in Colwick Road and Cardale Road, six motorists were issued with tickets. A driver not wearing a seat belt and a motorist using a mobile phone while driving were also stopped.

Police Constable Adam Smith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We regularly receive information from local residents about the wide range of issues that affect their lives and will always do our best to tackle issues that are most important to them and causing them concern.

“Speeding is an issue that residents are understandably concerned about, and we would like to reassure the people of Sneinton and Nottingham south that we regularly undertake speeding operations throughout the area.

“The result of this operation shows how important it is that we carry out action days like this to combat those who speed on our roads, don’t wear seat belts and use mobile phones while at the wheel, placing not only themselves but the public at risk.”
