Fears Edinburgh Christmas market may be cancelled after organisers pull out with weeks to go

Edinburgh Christmas markets could be axed this year after event organisers pulled out with just weeks to go.

Council bosses said they have been left "hugely disappointed" after German firm Angels Event Experience Ltd informed them they were unable to deliver this year's festive markets, throwing the event into chaos.

Angels Event Experience secured the contract in June and were due to run the festivities between November 19 and January 3. The markets were due to be back to full schedule this year, for the first time since the pandemic.

Santa Land was to return to East Princes Street Gardens, with rides for people of all ages, whilst Santa’s Grotto was once again to take residence on Castle Street.

Edinburgh Council chiefs are now scrambling to find alternative organisers, but said they are in positive discussions with other companies.

Council Leader Cammy Day said “We’re hugely disappointed that Angels Event Experience Ltd have been unable to deliver on their contract to produce Edinburgh’s Christmas.

"We’re in positive ongoing discussions around ensuring that Christmas events can be successfully delivered for the city this year.
