FBI Director Kash Patel ordered his public affairs staff to push the bureau's statistics at people criticising him over Jeffrey Epstein on X, only for his own spokesman to refuse after an anonymous troll mocked him, records show.

The extraordinary exchange took place on 5 February between Patel and Ben Williamson, the FBI's assistant director for public affairs, according to messages that surfaced in an FBI document release tied to the Epstein files.
