Early Thursday morning, federal authorities conducted a raid on a home owned by Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao as part of an ongoing investigation in California. The FBI agents were seen carrying boxes out of the four-bedroom residence located at 80 Maiden Lane, which is linked to the first-term mayor according to property records.
The FBI released a statement confirming the law enforcement activity at Maiden Lane but declined to provide further details at this time. In addition to Mayor Thao's home, searches were also carried out at two other residences about three miles south, owned by members of the Duong family who are associated with the recycling company Cal Waste Solutions.
Cal Waste Solutions has been under scrutiny for campaign contributions made to Mayor Thao and other city officials. The Duong family members, including Andy Duong, David Duong, and Linda Duong, are connected to the properties that were searched by the FBI.
Efforts to reach Cal Waste Solutions officials for comment on the raid were unsuccessful, and personal contact information for the Duong family members could not be located.
Mayor Thao, who is 38 years old, is currently facing a recall election despite being less than two years into her term. The recall effort, driven by concerns over increased crime rates and budgetary challenges, has garnered enough verified signatures to qualify for the November ballot. Thao assumed office in January 2023 after serving on the Oakland City Council.
