'Faultless' - William Saliba World Cup decision questioned after France prove Mikel Arteta right

Reigning World Cup champions France fell to their first defeat of the campaign this evening as they were defeated 1-0 by Tunisia. Didier Deschamps made a number of changes to his side after they had already secured their spot in the last 16, but didn't start William Saliba.

The Arsenal defender had been an unused substitute in Les Blues' opening two victories over Australia and Denmark and there were rumours circling around France that he would be handed a start in Deschamps' starting XI for their final group clash against Tunisia.

Instead, Ibrahima Konate and Raphael Varane started in the centre of defence as a number of changes were made from Saturday's win over Denmark. Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez were all rested but the Gunners centre-back was not given a chance.

With their qualification in the last 16 already sealed, France were unable to continue their 100% record at the tournament as Wahbi Khazri's 58th minute strike handed Tunisia their first win of the World Cup. Saliba was then introduced immediately after the goal.

In the half hour of action, the 21-year-old completed 37 of his 37 passes, made four recoveries and won four of his ground duels. There have been calls amongst French supporters for Saliba to start from the off after his impressive performances for Mikel Arteta's side this season.

Saliba has been a key member of the Gunners squad that sits top of the Premier League table. Arsenal have conceded 11 goals, the joint-fewest, in 14 games this season and Saliba's breakthrough campaign in England warranted him a place on the plane to Qatar.

And after France's shock defeat to Tunisia, Saliba has been praised for his cameo performance off the bench by fans across the globe. Here's what some of them have had to say...

@constantineleo: Saliba has not put a foot wrong since coming on. Keeps the ball moving way faster and with more ease than Varane.

@man_George: The way Saliba starts to accelerate is frightening

@adrianm_: Varane subbed for Saliba and France haven't conceded again... if I speak

@pew_pew_peeeeew: How does Saliba get so little respect? France have the most depth at CB in the world but there is an argument he's their best CB

@ScarefaceMo0: Saliba changed the game

@Obz100_: This Konate x Saliba partnership looks unbelievable

@afcDW: After one nervous early touch, Saliba was faultless. Didn't take long to come into his own

@koma_AFC: Saliba started 0 games and France have 0 clean sheets at the World Cup. Arsenal has best defensive record in the league. Just saying
