Authorities in Philadelphia are actively searching for a suspect following a fatal shooting outside a mosque in the city. The incident, described as an 'execution-type homicide,' occurred in the parking lot of the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society as a 43-year-old man was walking to a prayer service on Tuesday.
According to city police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the victim appeared to be the intended target of the shooting, although the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police have been in contact with at least one witness to the shooting.
Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots shortly before 5 p.m. Officers found the victim with gunshot wounds, including one to the head and multiple to the torso. The victim was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital at 5:13 p.m.
The suspect, described as a male wearing dark-colored clothes, was seen fleeing on foot and getting into a dark-colored sedan. The incident was captured on several private surveillance cameras, with one camera recording the entire event.
Chief Inspector Small stated that the video footage shows the shooter approaching the victim from behind and firing multiple shots at close range. The victim collapsed on the sidewalk, and the shooter continued to fire shots while standing over him. At least 17 shots were fired from a large caliber semi-automatic weapon.
Witnesses described the sound of rapid gunfire, with one individual expressing shock and concern over the sudden violence outside a place of worship. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information about the incident and are offering a $20,000 reward for details leading to an arrest and conviction.
State officials, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and US Senator Bob Casey, have expressed their condolences and support for the community affected by the tragedy.
