Rescuers have recovered the body of the final missing person at the site of a devastating fuel depot explosion in Italy's central Tuscany region. The tragic incident has resulted in a total of five fatalities, as reported by Italian media outlets.
The explosion, which occurred on Monday, led to the collapse of a building housing offices, causing injuries to 14 individuals. Tuscany's governor, Eugenio Giani, disclosed that two of the injured are currently in critical condition.
The blast took place at an ENI fuel depot located north of Florence, generating a dark plume of smoke that billowed into the sky. Witnesses situated kilometers away recounted hearing a powerful bang and feeling tremors from the explosion.
Initially, residents in the vicinity were advised to keep their windows shut as a precautionary measure. However, environmental authorities later confirmed that the air quality was deemed safe. The smoke temporarily disrupted regional train services in the area.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion at the depot in the town of Calenzano. Fortunately, swift action was taken to contain the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to storage tanks from the loading dock area where the explosion originated.
Prosecutors in the nearby city of Prato have initiated an inquiry into the tragic blast, seeking to shed light on the circumstances that led to this devastating incident.
