Fast food chain pulls out of taking over former McDonald's building

A fast food chain's plan to take over the old McDonald's building in Southport have been scrapped.

In May last year, German Donner Kebab announced that it would be taking over the abandoned McDonald's on the corner of Eastbank Street.

The planned development included a £500,000 cash injection and would have created 30 jobs. The chain is no longer pursuing its plans for the site, which is once again available to let via the Perkins Fox website.

McDonald's left the building in 2014, reducing the number of restaurants they own in the town from three to two. The popular fast-food chain opened in the 1980s and since closing down the site has remained empty.

It's the second blow to Eastbank Street in a week after the Poundland next door to the site announced that it had closed down. The property is currently listed for a long-term lease until 2026 and is being advertised at £28,000 a year.

Doner Kebab is a fast food retailer that opened its first store in Berlin in 1989. The firm has an outlet in Preston, as well as in countries around the world including the US, Canada, Germany, Sweden, UAE, Ireland, and Saudi Arabia.

The chain arrived in the UK in 2016 and currently operates 47 restaurants here, with a further presence in America, Canada, and UAE. Their menu boasts kebabs, burgers, and 'doner boxes' packed with chips, sauces, and other toppings.
